Science-based targets for climate and nature
Science-based targets help companies set measurable goals for climate and nature based on the latest scientific knowledge. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute supports companies throughout the process – from greenhouse gas accounting and nature impact assessments to target setting, implementation and follow-up.
An increasing number of companies face demands for credible, science-based targets from customers, investors and regulation. In the climate area, this means mapping greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain and having targets externally validated through the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). For nature and biodiversity, it involves analysing a company’s impacts and dependencies using the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) framework.
IVL has extensive experience in greenhouse gas accounting and nature impact assessments and supports companies in developing, validating and implementing targets for both climate and nature.
Our services within Science-based Targets
Choose the service that best matches your organization’s needs:
- Science Based Targets for large companies
For organizations with complex value chains and sector-specific requirements. - Science Based Targets for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
Based on the simplified SBTi SME standard. - Science Based Targets for Nature
Supporting companies in addressing impacts on biodiversity and ecosystems.
What is the difference between SBTi and SBTN?
SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative) helps companies set climate targets by reducing greenhouse gas emissions across the entire value chain in line with the Paris Agreement. It provides a globally recognized framework for corporate climate action.
SBTN (Science Based Targets Network) helps companies set science-based targets for nature by analysing and reducing their impacts on biodiversity, freshwater, land and ecosystems. The framework builds on the momentum of SBTi and expands the approach to nature-related impacts and dependencies.
In short:
- SBTi focuses on climate change and greenhouse gas emission reductions.
- SBTN broadens the perspective to include companies’ impacts and dependencies on nature.
