Oysters opened the door to employment for Svenja

It was the invasive Pacific oyster that led Svenja Hess to IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Today, she works as an aquaculture expert at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station, where IVL manages various research projects, focussed on mussels, oysters and seaweed.

  • SEADEEP sustainable blue bioeconomy

    The SEADEEP project develops and demonstrates digital and energy-efficient solutions for fisheries, aquaculture, and macroalgae cultivation in the North Sea and Baltic Sea regions. By combining sensors, artificial intelligence, data analytics and digital twins, the project explores how seafood production can become more resource-efficient, reduce energy use, and lower greenhouse gas emissions, while improving economic performance.

  • AQUACLEAR aims to remove PFAS

    In the Water4All project AQUA-CLEAR, researchers and companies are developing a new technology to remove per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in water. PFAS are highly persistent chemicals that can harm both the environment and human health. The technology will be tested in the laboratory, in a pilot facility at IVL, and later in industrial processes to provide cleaner water and improved water reuse.

  • GreeNTrans

    GreeNTrans explores how legumes can be used in hydroponic cultivation to replace synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. The project aims to support more circular food production, with lower greenhouse gas emissions and more stable crop yields.
