Blue economy combines healthy ecosystems with sustainable growth

In its work on the blue economy, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute takes a holistic approach. Through research and consultancy, we help government agencies and businesses to develop sustainable solutions for oceans, lakes and coastal environments – with the aim of integrating growth and innovation with thriving ecosystems.

IVL’s researchers and experts work in key areas of the blue economy – from offshore renewable energy, shipping and ports to coastal communities, tourism, climate adaptation and blue food. We combine environmental and sustainability analyses and policy development with marine data, digital solutions and business development. Together with government agencies and businesses, we develop knowledge, tools and solutions that contribute to competitive and sustainable development.

Blue Economy is one of IVL’s strategic innovation areas. Through interdisciplinary research and collaboration, we translate scientific findings into practical benefits, and create the conditions for Swedish stakeholders to participate in international collaborations. The aim is for IVL to be a leading Swedish hub for research, innovation and transition within the blue economy.
