Swedish program for oyster hatchery and grow-out
Despite favourable conditions, Sweden currently imports almost all oysters consumed domestically. This project develops a national system for oyster hatchery and grow-out, aiming to establish a sustainable and competitive Swedish production.
Domestic production is currently low, at around 9 tonnes per year, while imports exceed 300 tonnes. A key reason is the limited availability of oyster seed and the lack of a coordinated production and supply system. The project therefore focuses on building hatchery capacity in Sweden and developing cultivation methods adapted to Swedish conditions. By securing access to oyster seed, the project creates conditions for both farming and restoration of natural populations. Different grow-out systems will be tested at sites along the Swedish west coast to evaluate growth, survival, and operational performance under varying environmental conditions.
The work covers several parts of the value chain, from production to market and regulation. This includes developing technical solutions, analysing market opportunities and business models, and addressing permitting processes and planning issues. IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute contributes with business development, environmental assessments, identification of suitable farming locations, and evaluation of risks related to water quality, climate, and biological factors. IVL is also involved in regulatory and marine spatial planning processes, stakeholder dialogue, and is responsible for communication and dissemination of project results.
The project is carried out in collaboration between universities, industry, and public actors, and is supported by an international reference group comprising researchers and organisations from established oyster programmes in Europe, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
The project aims to deliver:
• increased and more stable access to oyster seed
• improved knowledge of cultivation methods in Swedish waters
• better conditions for businesses to establish and develop operations
• methods and data to support oyster restoration
• enhanced biodiversity and improved coastal environments
In the long term, the project can contribute to the development of a Swedish oyster sector and create new opportunities in coastal communities. The project is funded by Formas under the Blue Transformation call for coast and sea.
