FAIRTRANS – Research on a just climate transition

Fairtrans works to facilitate and accelerate a just climate transition in line with the Paris Agreement, drawing on the experiences and engagement of civil society.

The Fairtrans research program is now entering its second phase. This phase deepens the interdisciplinary knowledge of how the societal transition can be both effective and fair, in line with the Paris Agreement. Results from phase 1 show that most Swedes support ambitious climate policies but that measures are often perceived as unfair, hampering progress. Therefore, phase 2 focuses on perspectives of justice, political feasibility, and the roles of various actors.

The work will analyze the capacity of civil society to influence policy, combine technical solutions with changes in consumption and production patterns, and examine policy instruments with a focus on the EU. Phase 2 will also study local governance tools in planning, construction, and mobility, as well as develop collaborations with European organizations and train 500 union climate ambassadors. Phase 2 strengthens Fairtrans as a leading platform for co-created policy and research with international outreach.
