CARE – Households to receive support to become more circular
CARE is an EU-funded research and innovation project that helps households reduce food waste, extend the lifespan of clothing and make more circular choices in their everyday lives. Through research, advisory services and local pilot activities, the project develops solutions to facilitate the transition to a more circular economy.
The project brings together eleven organisations across Europe and engages more than 100 households in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany and Estonia. Together, the partners explore how households can reduce their climate and environmental impacts through different ways of reducing their food waste and change their clothing related behaviour to a more sustainable clothing consumption.
The role of households in the circular transition
Food waste and clothes account for a significant share of households’ climate and environmental impact. At the same time, they offer considerable opportunities for reducing resource use through relatively simple changes in everyday behaviour. Extending the lifespan of clothing, for example, has been identified as one of the most effective ways to reduce the environmental impact of textile consumption.
CARE supports households in testing new ways of consuming and using food and clothing in order to reduce resource use and prevent food and textile waste. The project promotes the exchange of experiences as well as new understandings around well-being in close collaboration with participating households.
IVL's role in the project
IVL contributes expertise in circular economy, sustainable consumption and life cycle assessment. Together with the project partners, IVL develops advisory services and tools that help households reduce their environmental impact. In collaboration with Lund University, IVL is also responsible for implementing the pilot study in Gothenburg.
The project has an interdisciplinary approach. The effectiveness of the pilot projects in reducing climate and environmental impacts will be calculated using life cycle analysis.
