Scaling Up Continuous Cover Timber
How can timber from continuous cover forestry become a natural part of future construction? In this project, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute brings together researchers, construction companies and public organisations from across Sweden to develop policy instruments and working methods that increase the use of timber that does not originate from large clear-cuts..
Today, continuous cover forestry accounts for a small share of Sweden’s managed forest area. The method is based on selective felling carried out continuously over time, rather than clear-cutting. Research shows that more diverse forest management can help preserve soil carbon storage, support biodiversity and promote healthier forests.
However, there are no clear policy frameworks, incentives, certification systems or procurement rules that enable the large-scale use of timber from continuous cover forestry. Together with researchers, construction companies, property owners, municipalities and forest owners, we therefore identify and develop the policy instruments and working methods required to increase its use.
We analyse and clarify the climate and biodiversity benefits for forest owners, construction actors and society at large. By combining research with concrete needs in industry and the public sector, we create the conditions for sustainable forest management that benefits the climate, ecosystems and the economy.
The goal is for timber from continuous cover forestry to reach purchasers and consumers, thereby contributing to the achievement of Sweden’s and the EU’s environmental goals.
