Innovations for greater public benefit
and strengthened Swedish competitiveness

The activities of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute in the environmental and sustainability field help build our society. By combining research and commissioned assignments in our work, we create value both in the present and for the future, and help keep Swedish competitiveness at the forefront.

Sweden and the world face a number of environmental and sustainability challenges, such as mitigating climate change, preventing biodiversity loss, and further improving air quality in an increasingly urbanised world. It is also important to use water resources more efficiently and to establish a more circular approach in society based on reuse and recycling. At IVL, we approach these challenges with confidence, with the aim of strengthening societal benefits and Swedish competitiveness.

From research to application

We always look for solutions to the challenges we encounter and take a forward-looking approach by identifying trends, risks and opportunities at an early stage. In 2025, we took the lead in a major international project on negative emissions technologies - an area that is rapidly growing in importance for both climate targets and Swedish industry.

At the same time, we are also making a difference in challenges that are closer to home. One study showed how advanced plastic sorting can reduce emissions - a solution with significant potential for municipalities, recycling companies and businesses seeking to take greater producer responsibility. Another example is our work combining movement data and process models to develop more energy-efficient wastewater treatment plants. Through these projects, IVL demonstrates how innovation can emerge when researchers, government agencies, and companies work together.

The green transition boosts Sweden's competitiveness

IVL is playing an increasingly important role in the green transition as a trusted partner helping both businesses and society make well-informed decisions. IVL is firmly rooted in real-world needs and challenges, in both our research and commissioned work. This ensures that our solutions do not remain on the drawing board, but are put into use and create competitiveness here and now.

It is this collaborative approach that makes IVL unique. We build bridges between stakeholders who would otherwise rarely interact, and create spaces where solutions can emerge through collaboration. It not only strengthens sustainability work but also helps reinforce Sweden’s long-term competitiveness.

In a time of increasing demands and uncertainty, we need actors that can combine scientific expertise with practical capacity for action.
