Technology mapping for improved Nordic emission projections
The project maps industrial processes and emission control technologies in the energy and industrial sectors at the national level. By linking emission sources to specific technologies, the project will enable more realistic emission projections and scenarios, strengthening the knowledge base for Nordic and international climate and air quality policy.
The Nordic countries report emissions of both greenhouse gases and air pollutants to international conventions. Today, emission projections often rely on static emission factors that do not reflect changes in industrial processes and technologies over time in the energy and industrial sectors.
The first phase of the project focuses on reviewing and evaluating current national methodologies for scenario development and identifying a priority area for further work. In the second phase, national mappings of process technologies and emission control measures used in the energy and industrial sectors will be developed. The project partners will then harmonise the data across countries and use the results to develop emission projections and scenarios for a selected sector.
The work will improve the ability to compare countries, develop alternative scenarios, perform sensitivity analyses and assess how new policy instruments could influence future emissions. The project is carried out in close collaboration with national expert agencies in Norway and Finland. IVL coordinates the project and contributes expertise in methodology development, data harmonisation and analysis.
The results will support Nordic and international policy development and contribute to improved emission projections for both air pollutants and short-lived climate pollutants.
