Research that makes a difference – read our 2024 annual report
Despite the geopolitical turbulence at the global level, IVL can look back on a successful year, with several advances for research and innovation in the field of environment and sustainability.
In our annual report for 2024, you can read about some of the projects we are working on. For instance we are studying the importance of greenery in our cities, developing innovative techniques for urban agriculture, and implementing new initiatives for Swedish seafood. You can also read about SWIC – our unique facility for circular water management that continues to evolve on site in new premises. All this and much more.
Financially, 2024 was a good year, with a nine percent increase in sales for the IVL Group as a whole. The number and size of our clients has increased, both in business and in public administration. According to the customer satisfaction index, IVL scored 8.7 out of 10, indicating very satisfied clients.

In 2024, we continued to deliver high quality, with an extra focus on client follow-up in our projects. We can see that this has had an impact. It is particularly pleasing to see that our clients give us high marks for expertise, dialogue and cooperation
, says John Rune Nielsen, CEO of IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute.
IVL has also grown in terms of employee numbers, and 2024 saw several strategic recruitments. Interest in employment at IVL remains high, which is very positive. IVL currently employs around 500 people, with expertise in virtually all areas of the environment and sustainability.
Stronger internationally
During 2024 we also took a significant step to strengthen our international operations: we acquired part of the Stockholm International Water Institute's operations in water, sanitation and hygiene. The group, which we call WASH, consists of some 15 people working on policy development and water-related issues in countries and regions with high water scarcity, and over the past decade has been active in more than 80 countries.
It is extremely important for IVL to support capacity development internationally in water, sanitation and hygiene, in order to meet an increasing challenge, often linked to climate change
, says John Rune Nielsen.
