IVL’s impact on water sustainability in Mumbai
Through strong collaboration, innovation, and IVL’s technical leadership, Mumbai is showing how cities can turn wastewater challenges into blue-green opportunities leading to cleaner rivers, healthier coastlines, and a more resilient urban future.
Mumbai generates 2,500–3,000 million litres of sewage every day, but only about half of it is treated—and much of that with outdated systems. The untreated wastewater flows directly into the Arabian Sea, causing pollution, harming marine life, and affecting public health. To address this, the Government of India and the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) are making major investments to modernize the city’s wastewater infrastructure and strengthen long-term water security.
As part of this effort, Mumbai is upgrading seven major wastewater treatment plants—Bandra, Worli, Malad, Dharavi, Ghatkopar, Bhandup, and Versova—using advanced tertiary treatment technologies. These modern facilities will allow the city to reuse up to 50% of treated water for non-drinking purposes, improving sanitation, reducing pollution, creating green jobs, and supporting the circular economy. These upgrades will benefit nearly 24 million residents, making the city healthier, more resilient, and better prepared for the future.
IVL Sweden is proud to support this transformation as Project Management Consultant for the Bandra (360 MLD) and Worli (500 MLD) Wastewater Treatment Facilities, as well as the Mithi River Restoration Project. This river restoration work focuses on improving river flow, restoring wetlands, and building green buffers to reduce flooding and enhance Mumbai’s climate resilience.
“IVL is proud to contribute to Mumbai’s water resilience through technical collaboration on the Bandra and Worli Wastewater Treatment Facilities and the Mithi River Restoration Project.”, says Rupali Deshmukh, country manager for IVL in India.
IVL’s contribution has been recognized by client:
“MCGM greatly values IVL’s contribution to Mumbai’s sewage treatment projects. IVL is a knowledgeable and dependable consultant, always ready with effective solutions during project execution.”, says Mr. A. B. Mengde, Chief Engineer, Mumbai Sewage Disposal Project (MCGM).
