The concentration of gaseous nitrates in the atmosphere was studied at two stations on the Swedish west coast. One station was situated in the centre of Gothenburg (urban) and the other 40 km south of Gothenburg in a rural area, unaffected by local sources. The results from the study show that the concentration of gaseous nitrates in the unpolluted area varied between 3 and 150 n mol m-3 while in the urban area it varied between 1 and 50 n mol m-3. The reason for the lower levels in Gothenburg is that the gaseous nitrates there are adsorbed on particles. The results also show that there is a linear relationship between the total nitrate concentration and the sulphate concentration in the atmosphere.
