A project at Aarhus University to develop greener methods to break the PFAS bond

A research group led by Assistant Professor Zongsu Wei and Associate Professor Zheng Guo at Aarhus University in Denmark, has started a project to develop a new method to remove PFAS using the synergy from enzymes and nano-photocatalysts.

The project will look into a solution that has been a challenge in the available PFAS removal technologies. The PFAS must be removed completely, not transferred into another phase that needs further treatment. This new method under development will require less energy and other types of chemicals.

‑ PFAS are some of the worst environmental pollutants, and unfortunately we don’t yet have green methods that can completely break the very strong carbon-fluorine bonds that make the substances extremely resistant to natural decay, says Assistant Professor Zongsu Wei.

This is an interesting project, and we surely follow up the group later on their progress. Assistant Professor Zongsu Wei will also participate and tell us about his earlier research on upcoming webinar Zero PFAS – 2, planned on 2nd June 2021.
