IVL to lead centre for dynamic modelling under the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution
Efforts to reduce air pollutant emissions under the UN convention on long-range transboundary air pollution have come a long way in the last 30-40 years. Continued success, however, places higher demands on environmental and decision data. IVL will assume the host role for the development this data using so-called dynamic modelling.

Speed limits for ships – new study investigates consequences for Swedish shipping
Are mandatory global speed reductions the solution to shipping´s climate emissions problems? This is the focus of a new research study that looks at this from a Swedish perspective. The answer is far from obvious, but findings suggest that the benefits of stringent speed reductions are overestimated. It may be possible to save fuel, but with reductions far below the ship's optimal speed, there´s a risk that fuel consumption may rise.

SDG:s set up in large companies seldom lead to action
A growing number of companies claim to follow the UN's global sustainability goals. A new Mistra Carbon Exit study shows that there is a risk that companies rather greenwash their activities by focusing only on goals where they are already performing well. Effective climate mitigation and a sustainable restart of the economy require companies to set long term goals that stick to the Paris Agreement and include the entire value chain.

Cleaner marine fuel delivers better onboard air quality
The 2015 Sulphur Directive, which limits sulphur dioxide emissions from ships in the Baltic and North Seas, has more than halved the levels of sulphur dioxide in the area. Recent research from IVL, Linnaeus University and Lund University shows that ships that run on cleaner marine fuel also have better air onboard.

More flexible electricity networks can lead to sizable climate emissions reduction
In collaboration with the Blixt Tech company, IVL has examined the extent to which demand control and production in the electricity grid can affect energy use and carbon dioxide emissions in the housing sector in four EU countries. The potential here is considerable, the study shows that emissions can be reduced by up to 24 megatons of carbon dioxide per year.

Waste heat in Europe – unique insight into the way industries are thinking
Although viable techniques for utilizing industrial surplus heat already exist, a mere fraction of the latent potential is currently used. The EU-project So What is working on a digital tool to facilitate collaboration between industry and energy companies and has delivered two reports on how to create business models and overcome obstacles to take advantage of these energy flows.

IVL life cycle expert appointed professor of building materials
KTH has appointed Martin Erlandsson from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute as adjunct professor of building materials with focus on life cycle analysis methodology. The reason for this is the need to break new ground when targeting sustainable construction with renewable building materials and building systems. A strong driving force here is the challenge of reducing the climate impact of the construction sector through increased resource efficiency.

Roadmaps show how the construction and infrastructure sector can achieve net zero emissions
The installation and construction sector accounts for about one-fifth of Sweden’s greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions are far more difficult to cut back on than those emanating from, for example, traffic – but it is possible. In three technical roadmaps, the Mistra Carbon Exit research programme shows how the installation and construction sector can achieve net zero emissions by 2045.

Better for the environment to renovate than replace flooring
Every year, 25 million square meters of flooring is installed in Sweden. A life-cycle analysis conducted by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute in cooperation with the floor maintenance company Bona shows that refinishing of wooden and PVC flooring saves both natural resources and carbon dioxide.

Digital twin secures commissioning of new Stockholm sewage works
Summer 2020 will see the installation of a revolutionary new treatment process at the Henriksdal sewage treatment facility in Stockholm. The implementation schedule is tight – full purification is required around the clock, even during reconstruction, so there is little room for mistakes and delays. To ensure that the new process will work optimally right from the start, Stockholm Vatten och Avfall will deploy a digital twin developed by IVL and Siemens.
