Welcome to IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute – the first environmental institute in Sweden. For more than 50 years we've contributed to a better environment and a sustainable future with applied research and development.
Common to all of our assignments is the interaction between ecological, economic and social perspectives
We at IVL pride ourselves for being Sweden’s first and oldest environmental research institute, and it is true that at the start of IVL neither the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency nor any environmental law or department existed. IVL's history largely coincides with the modern environmental work in Sweden and in Swedish industry.
The Institute for Water and Air Research Institute (IVL) was jointly formed by the industry and the government at a time when environmental problems became increasingly evident in Sweden, particularly when it came to the pulp and paper industries.
The name reflects the most high-profile environmental issues of that period - manifested by dead lakes, foul-smelling discharge and severe air pollution in connection to industries. Today we are an environmental agency concentrating on much more than that. Common to all of our assignments is the interaction between ecological, economic and social perspectives.
One of our most prominent flagships is Hammarby Sjöstadsverk, where researchers and experts work side by side with Swedish and foreign businesses to develop techniques that will make it possible to reuse treated wastewater. Also, by using the resources in sewage water we can turn traditional water treatment plants into suppliers of clean water, bio energy and nutrients that can be brought back to nature.
We also focus a lot o how to make our cities more sustainable. For example by exploring how refurbishment and upgrading schemes enable us to make dwellings constructed in Sweden between 1965 and 1974 climate smart and attractive - without simultaneously pushing up rents to an unacceptable level.
We have four offices in Sweden and one China and we employ 300 engineers, behavioural scientists, chemists, marine biologists, biologists, journalists, business developers and economists – to name only a few. We also possess exceptional specialist skills – almost a third of our employees have doctorates.
Our core values are credibility, foresight and a holistic perspective. Our vision is a sustainable society. We are driving the transition to this sustainable society by transforming science into reality, environmental problems into opportunities and linear processes into a circular economy.
