ReuseHeat wins one of the Global District Energy Climate Awards

The 2019 Global District Energy Climate Awards were revealed on 24 October 2019, during the first Sustainable District Energy Conference in Reykjavik, Iceland. The IVL-lead project ReuseHeat won the Award of Excellence in the category New scheme – a category awarding the vision of a new, highly energy-efficient district energy system.

The finalists were selected from cities and communities across the globe which demonstrate local district energy leadership in providing clean and sustainable energy solutions. The objective of Reuseheat is to demonstrate advanced, modular and replicable systems enabling the recovery and reuse of waste heat available at the urban level. This is done through four different demonstration projects showing the technical feasibility and economic viability of waste heat recovery and reuse from data centres (Brunswick), sewage collectors (Nice), cooling system of a hospital (Madrid) and underground station (Bucharest). In the contest the application developed at the demonstration site in Germany won the award. At the demonstration site in Brunswick waste heat from a data center is recovered and will be used for space heating in a new housing development. This solution will save some 1,284 MWh/a of primary energy, which is equivalent to 304 tons of CO 2 emissions each year.
