Nordic Air Quality Sensor Network
The Nordic Air Quality Sensor Network is a collaboration between Nordic municipalities working with low- and mid-cost air quality sensors to complement traditional air quality monitoring. The network supports knowledge sharing and practical experience exchange on how sensor data can be used in local air quality work.
The Nordic Air Quality Sensor Network was established in connection with its first meeting in Gothenburg in 2019, initiated by the City of Gothenburg. Since then, the network has grown into a collaborative forum for Nordic municipalities interested in the use of air quality sensors.
The network focuses on exploring how sensor data can be used outside of regulatory frameworks, without replacing established standards or reference instrumentation. The aim is to identify complementary applications of sensor data, for example for data assimilation, citizen engagement, and addressing local air pollution challenges. Knowledge sharing and experience exchange between municipalities are central to the network’s work.
IVL Svenska Miljöinstitutet has been involved in the network from the start and currently coordinates the network together with Oslo kommune, the City of Stockholm/SLB, and HSY in Finland. IVL contributes with research-based knowledge and supports collaboration between participating municipalities across the Nordic region.
Participation and collaboration
The network is open to all Nordic municipalities that work with, or have an interest in working with, air quality sensors. Participation may vary over time depending on ongoing projects and activities. Municipalities such as the City of Gothenburg, the City of Stockholm/SLB, Oslo kommune, HSY, NILU, and IVL have been involved since the early stages of the network.
Municipalities interested in the network are welcome to get in touch to learn more or take part in future activities.
