IVL's research has a real-world impact, and the application of our findings often inspires new research. The image shows Raam Ibrahim performing analyses in the laboratory at IVL.
Research and assignments that benefit all of Sweden
IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute's work to address environment and sustainability issues lays the foundation for the society of tomorrow. Through our systematic and steady approach, we help tackle important issues and provide the knowledge needed to advance sustainable development.
At a time when established facts are being questioned and alternative facts are spreading, societal progress is being hampered and our democracy is at risk. Knowledge that is grounded in sound science is essential for making well-informed, balanced decisions that lay the foundation for a sustainable society. Research is a systematic process, where we investigate phenomena to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us by collecting data, testing hypotheses and drawing conclusions, all for the benefit of different stakeholders in society.
Research and innovation are our core activities
Research, innovation and assignments are at the core of IVL's activities. Through our work in these areas, we address societal challenges related to the environment and sustainability. For example, IVL has helped increase the understanding of the impact of acidification on forests and soils, developed methods for measuring and remediating PFAS pollution, and created models for circular resource use. We also develop solutions for sustainable construction, climate adaptation and emission reductions. At the same time, there is a growing need for new knowledge as challenges related to the climate and environment evolve, and we anticipate continued strong demand for research-based decision making in both the public and private sectors.
Holistic approach and collaboration that benefits all of Sweden
IVL applies a holistic approach, addressing issues, which are often interdisciplinary in nature, on a systemic level while relying on collaboration both internally and externally with other organisations. We act as a bridge between academia, the business sector and the public sector, as well as between theory and practice, where theoretical knowledge is put into practice in industry, urban development and policy-making. Our shared knowledge and efficient structure have allowed us to build a collective organisational memory that enables us to accelerate the green transition while enhancing Sweden’s competitiveness.
IVL's research and acquired knowledge are rapidly put into practice in the assignments we undertake. We deliver benefits at the forefront of research and technology development by maintaining a continuous exchange between our research and assignments. Our operations are therefore naturally balanced between research and external assignments and services.
It is with great confidence that we look to the future, a future where IVL is well-equipped and balanced in its research and business activities to address critical environmental and sustainability issues.
