Scientific article by IVL highlighted by the European Commission

The scientific article ´Reduced European emissions of S and N - Effects on air concentrations, deposition and soil water chemistry in Swedish forests´ is recognized by the European Commission news service for decision makers in the environmental field. The paper is written by IVL staff and is based on results from 20 years of research within the Crown Drip Measurement Network (Krondroppsnätet).

Science for Environment Policy is a news site designed to help decision makers to keep themselves updated on the latest environmental research. It reaches 13,500 readers.

- Of course this gives extra impetus to the Crown Drip Measurement Network when our work is highlighted and used by such a renowned news site as Science for Environment Policy, says Gunilla Pihl Karlsson, lead author of the scientific paper.

The Crown Drip Measurement Network is a project run by IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute on behalf of air quality associations, provincial governments and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of the Crown Drip Measurement Network is to describe the environmental conditions, regional differences, development over time, and the effects of deposition of acidifying and eutrophying substances. The project has measured precipitation and soil water since 1985.

- A long term project like the Crown Drip Measurement Network gives us a solid understanding of the particular deposition of sulfur and nitrogen in forest areas in Sweden. Through the article, these results are now brought into a larger context. We are really happy about this, says Gunilla Pihl Karlsson.
