New Nordic centre regarding CCS research welcomes new industrial partners

Scandinavia's foremost experts on capture, transport and storage of Carbon Dioxide (CCS) are gathering in a new centre of excellence, coordinated by the Norwegian SINTEF and financed by the Nordic Council. The Swedish representatives in the centre, named NORDICCS, are IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, Chalmers and SGU.

The purpose of NORDICCS is to examine how the cooperation of all Nordic countries regarding the introduction of large-scale CCS, may help to reduce the climate impact. CCS has recently been highlighted by the EU Commission as a prerequisite for a sustainable and CO2 free energy system in Europe by 2050.

An important goal of NORDICCS is to create lasting networks, stimulate innovation and develop joint action plans to increase CCS relevant innovation for the industry.

- It is essential that we involve as many industry partners as possible in the centre. Currently Norwegian Statoil, Gassco, Norcem and Reykjavik Energy are active members. We will endeavour to increase the number of Swedish industrial partners, in order to achieve high relevance for the Swedish players in industry, society and politics. I want to emphasize that there are more sectors other than energy, cement and iron and steel industry which can have an interest in CCS, says Peter Stigson, project manager for NORDICCS at IVL.

NORDICCS currently consists of the following universities and research institutes:

  • Norway: SINTEF Energy, SINTEF Petroleum Research, Norway's Science and Technology University, Tel-Tek,  the University of Oslo, Gassco, Norcem and Statoil.
  • Finland: VTT.
  • Sweden: Chalmers, IVL and SGU.
  • Denmark: De Nationale Geologiske Undersögelser.
  • Iceland: Haskoli Iceland and Reykjavik Energy.
