IVL trains Iraqis in sustainable building

IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute has been working for several years for the establishment of a more sustainable water and energy infrastructure in Iraq. Carried out on behalf of the Swedish Trade Council, the work will continue in 2012 in the hope of making progress in other important public development sectors, such as waste management, transport and construction, all based on the systems and sustainability perspective that is a Swedish hallmark.

“We see that Iraq has a major need in all of these areas for knowledge and solutions that are cost-effective from a systems and life-cycle perspective," explains Executive Vice President Åke Iverfeldt of IVL.

IVL's involvement in the SymbioCity Academy project initiated in 2010 is concerned with the production of training materials and courses, as well as the training of Iraqi decision-makers, customers and engineers, in the area of sustainable building. Work has been carried out in three stages since the start. In the first stage, IVL personnel visited Iraq to meet customers and project engineers. In the second stage, 25 Iraqis and a small number of Swedish-Iraqis were invited to spend a week in Sweden to undergo training in sustainable building practice in the water and energy sectors. Products and system solutions were also discussed directly with Swedish experts, and working visits made to Swedish companies and installations. As part of the third stage, a review meeting has been held in Iraq to discuss ways and means of translating the knowledge gained into concrete projects in Iraq in the period ahead.

The aim of the project is to generate business between Swedish companies and Iraqi customers by highlighting the advantages of Swedish quality and Swedish solutions.

“IVL's role in this is to ensure that the Iraqis realise the benefits of sustainable infrastructures. Our idea is to spread Swedish expertise, along with knowledge of Swedish systems and Swedish products meeting our sustainability standards," says Jonas Frejes, researcher and project manager at IVL.

He also believes that this will make it easier to establish business contacts between the two countries:

“The competition in our business environment is extremely tough. Iraq is basically a rich nation and several countries — Turkey, Japan, China, Britain and the USA, to mention just a few — are all seeking to sell their knowhow and have an involvement in its reconstruction. So it's up to Sweden to seize this opportunity without delay," says Jonas Frejes.
