Gas welding of district heating pipework may present a risk of severe poisoning or death due to high carbon monoxide levels in the surrounding air if the area is poorly ventilated. This is the finding of a study of carbon monoxide formation in gas welding carried out by IVL Swedish Environmental Institute on behalf of the Swedish District Heating Association.
The initial report on PFOS (Perfluorooctane sulphanate) from the RE-PATH project reveals increased levels of the substance in watercourses and aquatic life in the vicinity of Stockholm-Arlanda and Gothenburg-Landvetter airports. However, the levels are not such that bathing or normal fish consumption is considered hazardous to humans. The exception is Lake Halmsjön near Arlanda, where a ban on fishing has been imposed.  
International emissions trading has grown explosively over the last decade and has a major role to play in future climate policy. This is the finding of a major review of emissions trading undertaken by researchers from IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute, University of Gothenburg and Luleå University of Technology.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) may be an important means of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. Although the potential for this is very good in the Nordic region, a great deal of technological development will be required before CCS can be introduced on a major scale, while political initiatives will also be needed. Public acceptance will be another criterion.
Researchers at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute have developed an energy scenario indicating that it is quite feasible to cut carbon dioxide emissions in Sweden by as much as 80 percent by 2050 — this under conditions of continued economic growth, increasing transport and a higher population.

As part of the Swedish SymbioCity concept, IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and the Swedish Trade Council have undertaken a training programme for Iraqis, initially in water production and effluent treatment, as an element in the reconstruction of Iraq´s infrastructure.
