Electrical and Electronic Waste

Electrical and electronic waste is one of the fastest growing waste flows both in Sweden and globally. It is also a waste group that can cause serious adverse consequences for both human health and the surrounding environment when not managed properly.

Inadequacies in the recycling step also leads to loss of important resources, such as metals, from the electronic waste, which is at risk of getting lost in the cycle. Improved knowledge about the flows of electrical and electronic products and waste is of importance in the work with the Swedish Environmental Quality Objectives a Non-Toxic Environment and a Good Built Environment. Additionally, statistics show that we use increasing amounts of electronics with new components, for example new types of batteries.

IVL works with the mapping and comparison of the Nordic systems for electronics collection (WEEE Setup), more efficient logistics for electronics collection as well as better recycling of materials such as plastic and metals from electronic waste.
