Transports

The transport sector is facing major challenges. Carbon dioxide emissions must be reduced significantly, as well as the emissions of air pollutants – both affecting health and the environment. Sustainable and efficient transports, as well as fuel and logistics solutions are important fields of activity for IVL.

How we travel and transport goods both by sea, by road, by plane or train are crucial for our current climate change situation. The transport sector is still mainly supplied by fossil fuels, accounting for over a quarter of all global carbon emissions. Emissions of nitrogen oxides leading to eutrophication, acidifying sulphur dioxide, particulate matter, and a number of other hazardous substances for the environment and health follows in the tracks of those emissions.

The prospects to convert to a sustainable transport system are however good. New standards, new technologies, effective policy instruments and changes in behaviour all reduce both emissions and costs for society.

Cooperation across borders

IVL is using all these new ways to tackle the issues at hand. We cooperate both with the transport industry, in a broad sense, as well as with the concerned authorities, and we participate in several major national and international research projects. Emission measurements, emission modelling and systems analysis form our core business, but we also have an interdisciplinary focus in the form of mobility and social sustainability, for example.
