In a few years time the world's largest wastewater treatment plant utilizing membrane technology will be located in Stockholm. This emerging technology is now being tested at Hammarby Sjöstadsverk, IVL's research facility.
Stockholm's population is on the increase and as this will necessitate increased capacity for wastewater treatment. This is the background to the decision to expand the Henriksdal plant, and invest in membrane technology, which will deliver more efficient cleaning with a smaller environmental footprint.
Membrane technology is deployed in major cities worldwide, but is new in Sweden. To build awareness and evaluate this technology, Stockholm Water has embarked upon a collaborative project with IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. Regular tests are now being carried out at IVL's pilot facility Hammarby Sjöstadsverk to establish whether membrane technology will be able to meet Stockholm's future needs.
– This pilot project provides us with important operating experience that we bring with us into the Henriksdal plant renovation project, says Niklas Dahlen, technical manager at Stockholm Water.
The Stockholm Future Wastewater Treatment project is a key green initiative. After reconstruction Henriksdal plant will be the largest treatment plant in the world utilizing membrane technology. The project is scheduled for completion 2020.
The tests carried out at Hammarby Sjöstadsverk show that membrane technology not only delivers a more efficient wastewater treatment but will also be able to cope with the increased load expected to accompany Stockholm’s rapid growth.
– Membrane technology is very effective when it comes to nitrogen and phosphorus removal, Stockholm’s wastewater treatment will also be able to handle future environmental requirements by a good margin.
Another advantage of membrane technology is that it denies passage to particles and particle-bound contaminants. In the future it will enable post-treatments that will further clean the wastewater, for example, by purging drug residues.
Further experiments designed to optimize nitrogen and phosphorus removal are now underway at Hammarby Sjöstadsverk. In addition, varying operating and membrane modes, as well as alternative solutions for the whole treatment chain will be studied and evaluated in order to attain the optimal process possible compatible with low resource consumption and minimal environmental impact.
